Transportation planning is a seemingly specific job...help people get from place to place, figure out where congestion occurs and plan projects to alleviate it, prioritize the funding sources to match the projects that the community needs most. That's it, right? Well, yes and no. Yes, in that the above-mentioned are the primary focus of the MPO. No, in that there's a lot more to it than that. Transportation has a huge impact on our lives. In some areas of the country, annual transportation costs outpace housing costs. Other areas--in fact, most urban centers in America--suffer from daily congestion problems causing delay for many travelers and freight shipments. Yet few people understand the details of our transportation system, how projects are planned, and what leads up to the point where you see construction crews at work. That's where our Learning Center comes in--from here, you can learn about MPOs, their role in the planning process, and most importantly, how you can become a constructive part of the process. Enjoy!
