Join the South Florida Commuter Challenge in May

During the month of May, the Florida Dept. of Transportation and its partners challenge commuters in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties to try an alternative transportation mode for their daily work commute.

Challenge participants will use a mobile app to log miles commuted by alternative modes of transportation and will compete against each other for most miles commuted. Let's make sure Palm Beach County leads the region in this challenge!

Free SunFest Bike Valet - May 3-7

For the third year, the MPO will support the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority (DDA) to provide a free bike valet service outside a main SunFest entrance gate at Clematis St. Ride a bike from home, office, public parking facility or from a Tri-Rail train. Dodge traffic congestion and parking issues to join more than 175,000 festival goers who will make their way into downtown for the state’s largest waterfront music and arts festival. Live more, drive less!

US-1 Multimodal Corridor Study Kicks Off May 6

A public outreach campaign for the MPO’s multimodal study of the US-1 corridor will begin with an event in Boca Raton’s Sanborn Square on Saturday, May 6, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Located at 72 N. Federal Hwy., the kickoff will include exhibits by the MPO and its study partners. Topics will include complete streets goals, transit analysis, and a study of the potential for health and socioeconomic impacts for communities along the route. 

The multimodal study will cover a 42-mile stretch of US-1 in Palm Beach County from Camino Real in Boca Raton to Indiantown Road in Jupiter. The purpose is to develop a comprehensive plan to implement continuous multimodal facilities that connect the communities along the corridor, including upgraded Palm Tran bus service. 

The MPO will announce a series of public workshops and design charrettes over the next six months to be held at multiple locations along the corridor. Check future newsletter issues and the MPO website for details, or go to the project Facebook page.

MPO Joins Palm Springs Bike Rodeo - May 6

 

The MPO will be among exhibitors participating in the second annual bike rodeo in the Village of Palm Springs on Saturday, May 6, from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

There will be activities for children ages 5 and up, to teach and promote bike safety.  

Children should bring their own bikes and helmets to participate in the bike safety obstacle course.

The event will be held at the basketball courts at the Village Center Complex located at 226 Cypress Lane.

MPO Complete Streets Design Guidelines Presentation - May 10

The MPO's draft Complete Streets Design Guidelines will be presented at a meeting of the working group on May 10. Everyone is invited to attend. The meeting will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at the Palm Beach MPO Conference Room #4E-12, 2300 N. Jog Rd., West Palm Beach, FL 33411. Click for more information regarding this effort.

Safe Routes to School Application Workshop - May 18

Register at www.SRTSFL.org to attend this workshop which is mandatory in order to submit a Safe Routes to School application beginning Sep. 1, 2017. The workshop will explain the program, provide tips on how to complete the application, and improve the chances of being selected for a portion of the $7 million available statewide through the Florida Dept. of Transportation for infrastructure projects. The workshop will be held from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Florida Dept. of Transportation's Broward Operations Auditorium, located at 5548 NW 9th Ave., Ft. Lauderdale.

West Palm Beach Traffic Forum - May 22

Save the date for a forum and public discussion to consider the traffic challenges of Okeechobee Blvd. and the growing downtown area on Monday, May 22. The forum will begin at 8:00 AM at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The event is hosted by West Palm Beach Commissioner and MPO Governing Board Member Shanon Materio, Town of Palm Beach Mayor Gail Coniglio, and Palm Beach County Commissioner Mack Bernard.  Safety Plan for Aging Road Users

The Safe Mobility for Life Coalition has released its updated Aging Road User Strategic Safety Plan. The goal is to reduce the number of aging road user fatalities, serious injuries, and crashes, while allowing seniors to maintain their safe mobility and connection to the community. The Florida Dept. of Transportation and its coalition partners want to work together at the state and local levels to improve safety, access, and mobility for Florida’s aging population. Click to learn more and to view/ download the recently updated Safety Plan

 North County I-95 Resurfacing Project

Tuesday, May 2
4:00 - 6:00 PM Open House (no formal presentation)

The Florida Dept. of Transportation will host an informational Open House for the I-95 resurfacing project from south of Indiantown Road (State Road 706) in the Town of Jupiter to north of Bridge Road (County Road 708) in Martin County. Construction is expected to begin May 9, 2017, and anticipated to be completed by summer 2019. Click for meeting notice.

Urban Land Institute Conference

MPO Executive Director Nick Uhren (right) served as a panelist for the Urban Land Institute's conference held April 19, along with Broward MPO Executive Director Greg Stuart (left) and Miami-Dade TPO Executive Director Aileen Boucle. The three executive directors spoke on south Florida's integrated transportation plans.

The session was part of ULI's "Digging Deeper into Mobility: Intersections Between Real Estate & Transit" for private and public sector land use leaders.

  • All Aboard Florida/ Brightline Rail Construction
    Construction continues on all three of All Aboard Florida's south Florida train stations including the West Palm Beach station where Brightline service is scheduled to begin this year.
     
  • Public Notices for FDOT District 4

  • Flagler Memorial Bridge & Flagler Drive Construction
    Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach will be closed in both directions on either side of the Flagler Memorial Bridge from 4th Street to 7th Street until summer 2017. The Flagler Drive overpass will be replaced with an "at-grade" intersection. New lighting, pedestrian features, traffic signals, drainage and landscaping are included.
  • Southern Blvd. Bridge Replacement Construction
    This project, which began April 3, 2017, includes replacing the existing bascule (draw) bridge and tide relief bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and Lake Worth Lagoon between the Town of Palm Beach and the City of West Palm Beach. New decorative lighting, pedestrian features, traffic signals, signage and drainage are included. A temporary bridge will be built north of the existing bridge to maintain traffic while the replacement bascule bridge is under construction. Construction is scheduled to last until late 2020.
